Forest School
Forest School is an approach to learning that is totally practical and child-led. It shares many of the values in the revised EYFS, and can equally cover many of the learning areas in Years 1 and 2. We have been leading Forest School sessions in a specially prepared area of the woodland for the past year. Many children enjoy visiting the Forest School site, either for a day’s experience, or as part of a longer term programme. Activities range from building small shelters to making a necklace, and are based upon the needs of the children.
Learning about plants
Our extensive grounds offer a wealth of opportunities for children to explore and learn about plants, from making daisy charts to climbing through an ancient oak tree! This is a particularly good introduction to Unit 1B and 2B in the Key Stage 1 QCA schemes of work.
Looking at minibeasts
Children are fascinated by minibeasts, and we can help them to spot these tiny animals in two different habitats, with fun games to help the children understand camouflage and animal homes. All children will make their own minibeast based on what they’ve learnt to take back to school with them.
Outreach opportunities
As well as working with children in Holt Hall’s woodlands, we are able to work with children in their setting or school, or even a local woodland or beach. The programmes we currently offer are specifically written for particular age groups, for example ‘The Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ is for Early Years children while our ‘Fun With Fairytales’ is aimed at children in Years 1 and 2.
